Barbecue sauce is a main food ingredient in our household. It’s how my husband takes his vegetables. I kid not. Barbecue sauce on everything.
Since it is consumed so frequently in our house, I knew I had to find a way to make a nutrient-dense sauce that tastes great but is free of things that are commonly found in store-bought sauces such as genetically modified ingredients, refined sugars, high fructose corn syrup, caramel coloring, natural flavors, modified food starch, and smoke flavor.
This recipe gets two thumbs up from my barbecue lovin’ husband and children. It’s mildly sweet with a nice tangy spice. It’s also very simple to adjust to your own taste preferences. If you want it sweeter, add more honey. If you want it tangier, add more spice. If you want it runnier, add more broth. As is, it’s thick enough to rub on a slab of meat, or dip your chicken nuggets into.
Remember when I wrote about how much I love bone broth and how I try to incorporate it into everything? This is no exception! And please, for the love of all things dippable in barbecue sauce, use homemade broth in this recipe. If you do, it will be rich in minerals and gelatin. If you don’t have homemade, the canned broth will still produce a healthier version of barbecue sauce than what you can buy at the store, it just won’t be as nutrient-dense. So, without further ado, here is our family’s homemade, nutrient-dense, real food BBQ sauce. I hope you enjoy it to the very last finger-lickin’ drop.
- 8 oz can tomato paste
- 2 cups bone broth (beef or chicken)
- ½ cup apple cider vinegar
- ¼ cup honey
- ¼ cup molasses
- 2 TB ghee (butter or coconut oil also work)
- 1 tsp unrefined sea salt
- ½ tsp pepper
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp paprika
- ½ tsp chili powder
- ¼ tsp cayenne powder
- ⅛ tsp clove
- Combine all ingredients in a sauce pan over medium heat.
- Bring to a boil.
- Once the sauce is boiling, reduce heat to a slow simmer.
- Simmer for one hour.
