We live in a world that is full of passive aggressive followers. It is so easy to “follow” someone on social media without ever knowing who they truly are. This kind of following is not what Jesus was talking about when he tells us to follow Him in John 12:26. He wants disciples!
A disciple is someone who follows or studies another person in order to learn from them. A disciple of Jesus is someone who has put their faith in Him and chooses to follow Him. In the Bible, Jesus had 12 disciples who came alongside Him to learn from Him. There was a deep, real, raw relationship between Jesus and His disciples.
That same opportunity is available to us today! We can also be disciples of Christ, but our culture makes it very difficult to pursue this kind of relationship. We hide our struggles, hurt, and pain from each other and are uncomfortable with real conversations. We prefer to communicate behind a screen and to check in on our “friends” through their status updates and text messages. But God wants more from us. He wants us to follow Him with a passionate, raw, and authentic kind of faith that is often counter-cultural.
So my question for you is, are you a true disciple of God, or do you just follow Him from a distance? If you are unsure, ask yourself these questions:
- Do you earnestly seek to know God and to be more like Him?
- Do you find yourself growing in your ability to display the Fruits of the Spirit? (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control)
- Are you the same person at church as you are at home?
- If you couldn’t speak, would people still know you follow Jesus? (Do your actions speak louder than your words?)
- Do you selflessly love others?
- Are you closer to God now than you were a year ago?
In all reality, there’s not a formula to determine if you are a disciple of God. That boils down to what is in your heart. However, chances are if you answered yes to most of these questions, you are on that journey.
Last year, my husband did a series with our youth group on discipleship. I loved it so much I asked him if he could compile his lessons into a book. He did, and he titled it #Disciple. #Disciple is a 30 day devotional through the book of John taking an intimate look at the characteristics of a disciple of God. It’s designed to be a quick read, but to challenge you spiritually.
This book is now available in pdf format or you can purchase a printed copy through our affiliate Amazon.
