Love the ease and simplicity of store-bought taco seasoning, but not the ingredients? Make your own with this simple, tasty homemade taco seasoning mix!
I have come to the realization that 9/10 of my recipes on this blog are taco flavored. My Taco Stuffed Peppers, Taco Salad, and Taco soup are all family favorites. I realize that this is a weakness, it’s just…tacos! I live in the southwest, what can I say?
I’ve been making this taco seasoning for my whole married life, and so it’s kind of funny that I am just now blogging about it. I guess I figured that every blogger and their mother has a taco seasoning recipe, and they are all quite similar, but I finally decided to add one more to this taco-lovin’ world.
Making your own, homemade taco seasoning mix is one of the easiest things you can do to add a punch of flavor to any meal without the yucky ingredients found in so many store-bought packets. Take this list of ingredients, for example, from a popular brand seasoning packet:
Maltodextrin, salt, chili pepper, corn starch, sugar. Contains less than 2% of: spice, natural flavor, partially hydrogenated soy bean oil, silicone dioxide (anticaking agent), yeast extract, ethoxyquin (preservative)
First off, Maltodextrin is the first ingredient. What is maltodextrin? It’s a starchy filler! It’s also known to negatively affect gut bacteria (source), may be genetically modified, and is not a real food ingredient.
The store-bought mix also contains corn starch and sugar – other unnecessary additives that are most likely genetically modified. And doesn’t the hydrogenated soy bean oil and silicone dioxide sound appetizing?
Finally, let’s not forget the yeast extract (MSG in disguise) and ethoxyquin, which acts as a food preservative in some countries, and a pesticide in others. (source)
And that, my friends, is why I make my own taco seasoning. It takes 24 seconds to mix it all together and is delicious!
